The first step to modeling is out of most people's control. Since models are generally extremely attractive people they must conform to what the public finds 'attractive'. Take a look at the checklist below to see if you are ideal for modeling.
- Height - The most successful models are usually 6' or taller. Though, there are many talented models that are under 6' and doing just fine in the business.
- Straight Teeth - Since smiles convey a sense of happiness models often have to show their teeth. Straight and white teeth is something people obviously prefer to see.
- Clear Skin - Acne, tattoos, scars, and pigmentation disorders are, unfortunately, not in high demand.
- Great Personality - Models have to work with a lot of people and have to be liked. How you interact with others is often just as important as your looks to the larger agencies.
- Fitness - Your body is what sells you in this business. Regular exercise along with a good diet usually must be employed to get you the image that big business wants to see. Being overweight or even too muscular can end your career in modeling before it starts.
- Competitiveness - Everyone wants to be a model and with good reason. Since there are so many people out there trying to reach the same things you are, you must be ambitious but not ruthless. Take advantage of deals that come your way or new means of advertising. Be careful not to waste your time and talent on scams.
- Independence - Modeling can take you all over the world and back. You need to have the ability to pick up and leave at short notice.
If you failed to meet one of the above; weigh the alternatives. "Should I try to change it", "Should I give up just because I don't have what today's agents are looking for" are both questions that only you can answer.
